The AI competency training provides all content that is necessary to prove competence in accordance with the AI Regulation (KI-VO Art. 4). This includes technical, legal and ethical aspects of using AI.

Am I required to train my employees in AI skills?

Yes, in accordance with Article 4 of the AI Regulation (KI VO), you are required to ensure that your employees and people who work with AI systems on your behalf have a “sufficient level” of AI competence. Uniform training with certification makes it easier to prove this competence and ensures clear standards in your company.

What happens if my company doesn't provide AI training?

A lack of AI expertise can have significant legal and financial consequences. Violations of the AI regulation can result in fines of up to 35 million euros or 7% of annual global turnover. Data breaches due to incorrect use of AI can trigger fines of up to 20 million euros or 4% of annual turnover as well as compensation claims under Article 82 GDPR. A lack of AI knowledge increases the risk of gross negligence and intensifies fines — even for copyright or competition law violations through AI systems.

In addition, there is a risk of personal liability on the part of management if sufficient AI expertise is not ensured. Certified AI training minimizes liability risks and ensures compliance.

Why does a lack of AI expertise lead to management liability?

If management does not ensure that the necessary AI expertise is available in the company, they commit a compliance violation. As a result, they can be held personally liable, especially if untrained employees commit legal violations — for example through data breaches, discriminatory AI decisions or violations of the AI regulation.

Who is required to receive AI training?

Companies, government agencies and organizations that use, provide or manage AI systems are required to ensure that their personnel have sufficient AI expertise. This applies in particular to employees who work in areas such as data analysis, personnel management, customer service or automated decision-making processes. Managers must also be familiar with the legal and ethical framework conditions in order to ensure the legally compliant use of AI systems.

Do all employees have to take part in the training?

Comprehensive training of all employees is highly recommended, as AI technologies are now used in almost all areas of work. Training can only be dispensed with if it is demonstrably ensured that certain people do not use AI. However, as this is difficult to control, training remains the safest solution for everyone. Do existing employees also have to complete the course or just new ones?

A course “AI competence requirement under Article 4" is required for all relevant employees, regardless of whether they are new to the company or have worked there for a long time. According to Article 4 of the AI Regulation (KI VO), all persons who work with AI systems or influence their decisions must have sufficient AI competence.

Does the course meet the legal requirements of the KI-VO?

How is the learning content designed?

The training is specifically tailored to employees and provides a practical basis for using AI safely. In doing so, abstract theories and the enumeration of legal articles are deliberately avoided. Instead, the focus is on comprehensibly formulated, everyday instructions that help participants use AI safely and in accordance with the rules in their everyday work.

The content is divided into short lessons of 1 to 3 minutes to enable efficient and understandable learning. First, the technical basics are covered, followed by legal training, so that practical application and legal requirements are meaningfully combined. Accompanying exam questions ensure that the content taught can be understood and applied directly.

In addition, participants receive training materials in PDF format with approximately 70 DIN A4 pages, in which the content is explained and repeated in more detail.

Who are the lecturers and what qualifications do they have?

The training is led by experienced experts who cover both technical and legal aspects of using AI.

The technical part of the AI training is led by Tobias Kröher, an experienced senior AI consultant from the renowned AI platform nele.ai. Tobias Kröher has extensive expertise in the implementation and application of AI technologies and has already successfully conducted over 200 AI training courses. His technological expertise includes advising companies on the introduction and optimization of AI applications. In addition to his consulting work, he has made a significant contribution to the development of practical training methods that make it possible to communicate complex technical content in an understandable way.

The lecturer for the legal lessons and author of the legal training materials is Dr. jur. Thomas Schwenke, LL.M. Commercial (UoA), a renowned lawyer with a focus on data protection, IT and media law as well as AI compliance.

His professional experience includes legal advice to companies and authorities in the areas of data protection, online law and the use of AI. In addition to his work as a lawyer, he is a book author, podcaster and academic guest lecturer, which means that he knows how to convey complex content in an understandable and practical way.

Dr. Schwenke was awarded the Society for Data Protection and Data Security Science Prize and was repeatedly honored by WirtschaftsWoche and Handelsblatt as a top lawyer for data protection and IT law.

How long does the training last?

The training lasts a total of approximately one hour, of which approx. 40 minutes are spent on the course videos and the remaining time is spent on answering exam questions.

Is the course barrier-free?

Yes, the course is designed so that it is also accessible to people with visual disabilities. The content is compatible with screen readers, visual materials are supplemented with alternative descriptions, and navigation is intuitive. We are also continuously adapting the course to current accessibility standards.
